Solar Energy: What It Is
Solar power has been receiving much praises over the recent years. As a potent source of renewable energy, it can help thwart global warming. However, when we think of solar energy, what normally come out of our minds are those bulky panels placed over roofs that take away what we spent for to beautify such portion our homes. This factor alone causes hesitation to many homeowners.
Other factors that discourage people from using solar power are the initial costs involved and the area required for their installation. If you want to set up a solar power source, you need to prepare considerable funds for the project although it will be compensated in the long the run considering how much you can on energy costs. With regards to the area required, it should be large enough for the solar panels to be effective. This can be difficult in most urban areas due to space restriction. However, solar power can be of great help in far away towns which are not reached by electricity lines.
But what is solar power? The easiest way to describe it is the energy coming from the sun. This energy is converted into electricity through the use of certain equipments. The electricity produced can then be used to run any electricity powered device such as home appliances, vehicles, boats, and even spacecrafts.
Solar power is a renewable energy. This means that such energy is resultant from natural processes which are continually replenished. If you opt for solar power, you do not have to worry about running out of energy source even after a million years. What is also good with solar power is its lack of negative impact to the environment. It does not emit any substance that can be harmful to Mother Nature or even to humans.
Solar energy is converted to electricity in two ways, through the use solar panels and by lenses and mirrors. Solar panels, otherwise known as photovoltaic arrays or solar cells, are manufactured using silicon which is capable of absorbing the energy coming from the sun. At the time energy is absorbed, solar panels then convert them to heat or electricity. On the other hand, lenses and mirrors collect energy from the sun by concentrating the sunlight to produce heat. The heat produced is then converted to electricity.
Despite the high costs involved, the amount of space needed, and the way solar panel can affect a home’s aesthetic appearance, we should realize that solar power is the most promising energy source we can have. In the current years, these downsides have been given attention by experts and they are now developing ways on how to address them.
Our excessive dependence on non-renewable energy resources would result to their depletion in the coming years and if we let this happen, global difficulty would surely occur. Solar power cannot be used as a sole replacement of non-renewable energy but if their use is increased, utilization of non-renewable gas would be minimized significantly. The environment would be also benefited as the emission of harmful gases from non-renewable fuel is reduced.
